Grand Final Day

Posted by bjurcan | Tuesday 8 September 2009 8:50 am

Well it has been twelve months and we have come full circle and this weekend we are back at the scene of some good and some bad memories. This Saturday at 10.30 the day kicks off with the Under 18 Bulldogs in their first Central Highlands Football Grand Final. Steve Cowan and Scott Winduss have had the boys up and running since the start of last November and the results have been obvious. With a hard running and well drilled team on the park, the Daylesford under 18’s have reached their first Grand Final since the mid 90’s. The funny thing about that team was that one of the current coaches, Scotty, was a member of that unit, along with current Senior footballers Luke Adams and Clayton Scoble. Lets hope the ‘Pups’ set the tone for the day, and can reverse the results on the only team that has beaten them this year, Ballan. With the wide open spaces of Northern Oval, the boys should be well suited to the ground and hopefully use their running game to perfection. Good Luck fellas.

Then to the senior game. Not much needs to be said about this one. With probably one of the greatest rivalries in country footy, the Bulldogs will look to avenge last years 10 goal smacking at the hands of Cross town rivals, Hepburn. This year we have seen two contrasting games. The first where the Bulldogs came away with an 87 point thumping of the Burras. The next game the boys seemed to be well off their game early and only clicked into gear half way through the third quarter. With lots of ‘what if’s’ about contentious marks and goals on the day, we were lucky to come away with a one point win and now the rest is history. So it has once again come to this and with two very different teams facing off compared to last year, lets hope the Bulldogs can come away celebrate what has been a fantastic year by Luke Beattie and his team. Go Dogs.

Under 18s Second Semi Final Vs Hepburn

Posted by bjurcan | Monday 31 August 2009 8:27 am

With a Grand Final berth up for grabs the large vocal crowd saw another terrific contest between these two great cross town rivals. In atrocious conditions the Bulldogs took advantage of the early dry ball to apply scoreboard pressure. Paddy Dwyer in a powerhouse display played with tremendous desperation.  As the rain teemed down and with the ground resembling a swamp, Hepburn fought back to grind out a slender lead at the half time break. The Bulldogs Zac Tisdale continued to put his big frame on the line creating opportunities. The third quarter was another tight affair with desperate defence from both sides keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum. Hayden Cowan adapted well to the conditions driving the ball forward through the mud from across half back into the forward fifty. As the rain abated during the final quarter Daylesford were able to at last establish a break on the scoreboard assisted by goals to Aidan Mill following a brilliant mark off an absolute worm burner and a clever check-side from tight on the boundary by Lewis Ingham. Darcy Shewell fought his way back from a heavy knock early to have real impact in defence as the game progressed. Hepburn fought it out to the last but at the final siren Daylesford showing plenty of heart in a tremendous team effort to run out winners and move straight into the Grand Final playoff.
